Past Performance - June 5, 2010

This show features The Chuck Wagon Gang, our own Tim White's VW Boys, Donna Ulisse and North Sea Gas!

The Chuck Wagon Gang will bring their unique brand of gospel music to the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia to tape an episode of our award winning public television concert series Song of the Mountains. Also on the show that same night will be the distinctive music of Tim White and the VW Boys along with Donna Ulisse and North Sea Gas a Scotch-Irish group from Scotland.

Seventy-four years is a long time in any business, particularly in a musical group of any genre. The Chuck Wagon Gang holds the distinction of being the oldest recording mixed gospel group still recording and performing with ties to the original founding. The group came from their humble beginnings in 1935 until today and is nominated this year for the “Mixed Group of the Year” in the Singing News Fan Awards which will be given out at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky in September. The Chuck Wagon Gang continues to sing as instructed by founding member Dad Carter instructed, “Sing the old songs and sing them the way I taught you.”

The VW Boys
make their third appearance on Song of the Mountains with their blend of music, magic and comedy. The group brings comic relief and some good solid music to any stage. Tim White, host of Song of the Mountains sings and picks with the group which also includes Smyth County, Virginia natives Dave Vaught and Fat Albert Blackburn. Lots of fun with these guys!

Country music fans remember native Virginian Donna Ulisse from her time on Atlantic Records when she released a critically acclaimed traditional country album “Trouble at the Door” with 3 singles and two videos and appeared on “Hee Haw, “NBC’s Hot Country Nights”, “Nashville Now” and “Crook and Chase”. Bluegrass fans have been getting to know Donna over the past few years through her own brand of bluegrass often termed “Bluegrass Without Borders” which is mostly self-written. Her 2007 CD “When I Look Back” featured ”I’m Calling Heaven Down” which won the Top Bluegrass Song in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Awards. The title track from her 2009 release “Walk This Mountain Down” was in the Bluegrass Unlimited charts for six months and in June 2009 she was the #1 artist on Sirius XM Satellite radio’s Bluegrass Junction and her song “I Lied” was #1 five different times during the same year.

Going for thirty years and stronger than ever! One of Scotland's most popular bands, North Sea Gas entertains with guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, bodhran, whistles, banjo, and great vocals featuring tremendous three part harmonies. Over the years North Sea Gas has recorded 16 albums and are constantly adding new material to their show. Their latest album, "Edinburgh Toon" was released in July 2009. Previous album, "Rosslyn", has received wonderful reviews from folk magazines, newspapers, etc., including Dirty Linen (USA), The Scots Magazine, and The Living Tradition. Their show, as their albums, consists of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material, all put together with a style of their own. With Gold and Silver disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association they consistently sell out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
