American Artist Appreciation Month

Updated: Aug 9

This August, The Lincoln Theatre celebrates American Artist Appreciation Month by spotlighting the talented folks who fill our Box Office and gift shop, Lola's at The Lincoln, with their beautiful crafts.

Regional artists of various specialties including painting, smithing, soapmaking, and much more have a treasured place at Lola's. The Lola's tradition is to share our local heritage with patrons who travel from near and far to marvel at our history. After all, Lola's at The Lincoln is named after the eccentric and exceptional local artist, Lola Poston, who lent her talents to the 6 massive murals inside the historic venue. Learn more about a few of our top-selling artists:

CANDY WHITT

Inside Lola's, you'll find no shortage of intricately painted wood and glass ornaments fit to celebrate every season and occasion. Adorned with designs like spring flowers, butterflies, pumpkins, smiling snowmen, positive messages, and beyond, Candy Whitt's ornaments are the perfect keepsake to take home to a loved one– or to cherish for yourself. She also has an assortment of other goods for sale at Lola's including jewelry, canisters, crocheted items, and knickknacks. Candy has been a crafter for 50 years, and even sold her first artwork while she was still in high school.

"I love to watch people look at my work and smile. Whether they bought it or not, they smiled. And that makes it all worthwhile, inspiring me to continue." - Candy Whitt

MAX ARCHIBALD

Quirky handmade polymer clay earrings and statement bags with groovy designs are displayed by multi-faceted young artist, Robert (Max) Archibald. Max often draws inspiration from landscapes and nature and possesses a deep love for surrealism. He also loves to work in multiple mediums like painting, apparel, and cosmetics, to name a few.

"I have been painting as long as I can remember. Art has always been my safe space where I can create worlds I imagine myself in." - Max Archibald

AJ CLARK

Annajean (AJ) Clark brings the beach to Marion, Virginia. She creates one-of-a-kind decoupage seashells in designs that are truly heartfelt. A shell collector and beach lover, AJ finds unique relics of the sea and transforms them into take-home trinkets, ornaments, and magnets. Decoupage involves cutting and gluing thin paper materials like tissue paper or the outermost layer of a napkin to a surface and then covering it with gloss or another protective medium. All shells are claimed from the Outer Banks, North Carolina; Cape Hatteras, Ocracoke, Holden Beach, and Frisco.

"Each shell tells a story." - AJ Clark

LINDA STANTON

Artist Linda Stanton offers products with vibrant colors and delicate textural designs. Linda works in many mediums, including painting with watercolor and alcohol inks, which requires great delicacy. Other unique and signature works include "mud-painted" trinkets. The "mud" is a glass and ceramic texture medium. It creates the most beautiful brush embroidery textured designs on ornaments, ceramic jewelry boxes, paintings, and decorative items. Lola's at The Lincoln also carries an assortment of her delightful greeting cards and original framed works.

PAPA'S HABERDASHERY

Papa's Haberdashery started as a hobby and has grown into a thriving business. Eric Rhodes and Hilarry Woods live in Wytheville, Virginia and have been working with leather for 7 years. They do custom leatherwork along with traditional items. In Lola's, you'll find many thoughtfully crafted leather bags, earrings, and other accessories. The artist duo even travels to comic cons and festivals to showcase their leather products.

Lola's at The Lincoln is proud to host the works of these local artists among many others. The next time you're in downtown Marion, don't forget to stop by for the perfect handmade gift. Shop Local. Shop Lola's!
